Overview

Shared NetID accounts are NetIDs that can be used by multiple users or for access by systems, devices, or services. These accounts are commonly used for connecting IT resources—such as printers, applications, or servers—to the Texas A&M network.

Shared NetIDs do not have the same privileges as a personal account, and can’t access Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or a Texas A&M email account by default. Only full-time employees can request a Shared NetID.

Getting Started

To request a Shared NetID, full-time employees should complete a Shared NetID Account Request form. Use the Proxy Account Management Tool to manage all special accounts, including Shared NetIDs.

Service Details

Shared NetIDs are typically used for authenticating access to university systems and devices, not for full account services such as email or Office 365.

  • Shared NetIDs cannot access Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or TAMU email by default.
  • They are appropriate for technical use cases such as device authentication, printer setup, or application integration.
  • Shared NetIDs are owned by the requester (proxy holder), who can designate additional proxies to manage or use the account.
  • A Shared Forwarding Address is not the same as a Shared NetID. The former is designed to forward mail, while the latter supports authentication and device/system connectivity.

Features

  • Supports device, application, or service-level authentication
  • Managed through the Proxy Account Management Tool
  • Proxy delegation for account oversight and access control

Guidelines

  • A Shared NetID should be treated with the same security precautions as a personal NetID.
  • Use of a Shared NetID must comply with university policies on identity and access.
  • Contact the system manager for elevated privileges, as Shared NetIDs do not automatically come with them.
